    TDS HIGHLIGHTS

 TDS Commemorated His Majesty's Coronation

His Majesty, King George Tupou V, coronation was a memorable ceremony, on the 1st August, 2008. Many Head of States and Government representatives attended to commemorate the royal ceremony. TDS military parade marched at Tongatapu as well as to the Northern Islands, Vava’u and Ha’apai. The Commander of TDS, senior officers, Warrant Officers and other ranks put on all their efforts to commemorate this historical event.

TDS Troops withdrawal from Iraq

TDS fourth contingent of 55 soldiers who were deployed to Iraq in August 2008 returned back to Tonga before Christmas last year. Tonga first sent a contingent of 44 soldiers to Iraq in 2004, Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF04), in response to a request from the American government for assistance. More than 200 Tongans soldiers have served in Iraq to date. All returned safely and unharmed.

Emergency Power to aid civil authority

In November 16th 2006 (16/11) riot that deteriorated from days of political demonstration, left the central district of Nuku’alofa in ruins. At this time the government declared a state of emergency (Emergency Power) to restore law and order to the capital. TDS stood up day and night manning check points, guarding key vital installation point, patrolling and investigating plunder. The state of emergency was repeatedly extended and is still in place to date.
